Gartner group is reporting that Apple has ordered as many as 10 million 3G iPhones. This in addition to its existing stock.
And rumors are circulating from around the Web that many of the larger Apple stores are completely out of iPhone stock. Is it coincidence? Most certainly - but it sure makes for great speculation.

I had read somewhere that there are rumors of OLED screens. While I find it highly unlikely, I also find it very appealing.
Imagine said 3G iPhone with Adobe’s AIR support. Now couple that with their new Photoshop Express (which is beyond awesome)… wow.
Some speculation here, if I may.
First, I hear (I think it was The Register) that the OLED displays will cut down the weight and power usage, and make for a thinner display. Thinner display, thicker battery, more power for 3G useage.
Second, what about switching signaling to save bandwidth and power? Apple’s got some bright minds, so why have 3G on all the time when you don’t need to use it? My bet is that Apple will employ a trick of ISDN lines: Use GPRS for short messages (as it’s just dialup speeds). Email comming in? Power up EDGE. Need Google Maps or Safari now? Power up HSPA (aka 3G). This takes roughly 15-30 seconds to connect each one, and under 5 to disconnect.
Of course, if a known Wifi spot’s around, skip EDGE and HSPA, connect to that instead and use that.
Well, considering one of the first quoted sources for this info was Kevin Rose, I’m not too sure whether I believe this or not since he was so far off on the iPhone information he said was to be right on before the phone was actually released. Sure it would be nice if they do upgrade it to what the guessed specs are or maybe even partially upgraded would be good too. If it happens it happens, if it don’t it don’t.
Steve that’s exactly why my post makes it clear I am dubious - but again, it’s fun to speculate.
I did notice the other day the they will ship you a new one in 5-7 days at the Apple store. Whereas the MacBook Air is available in 24 hours and all four stores near me.
Whether that means that release of the 3g is just over the horizon or even a 32G model with a larger screen we’ll find out when Steve Jobs feels the time is right.
Now it’s just one of those things that make you go hmm.
Does anyone know if the 3G network has as many ups and downs as EDGE? Some days I can stream an audio podcast over EDGE, somedays I can’t, and both instances I have 5 bars of reception.
