We all have our sources. And I don’t know any blogger, podcaster or reporter covering the iPhone who will divulge their sources. I won’t either.
Sometimes sources are good; sometimes bad.
You can chalk what I’m about to say up to rumor or fact - it’s up to you. But 90% of it comes from trusted sources who have given me good information before.
Now maybe they believe what they are saying is true. And still they could be wrong. In the past, they’ve been right more often than not.
So here’s my iPhone 2.0 prediction…
The phone will be announced at WWDC in June. It won’t ship until later in the quarter. It will of course be 3G. It will be thicker than the previous version (All of you who said that a 3G chip set wouldn’t make the phone bigger were clearly off the mark on this.) and it will NOT be black. Most pundits are predicting a black iPhone, i.e., a black back on the phone rather than silver.
The phone will NOT have a GPS inside, but rather, will be configured to work with third party GPS devices attached to the phone through the docking port. There will be no 8-gig model. I have no other information, but I assume that means a 16-gig model only or perhaps we finally get the 32-gig phone.
The US price will be the same as the original iPhone.
You will not be able to replace the battery. Battery life will be about the same as the previous version. Given the addition of the 3G chipset, that is an accomplishment.
That’s it. That’s the end of my predictions because it’s the end of the information I have. How accurate will it be? We’ll find out soon enough.

Ok so I know this might be asking a lot but do we ‘know’ if the phone is thicker due to the 3G chipset? I’m just saying, it’s *possible* that the phone is thicker to have a larger capacity battery need to keep battery life the same with a 3G power-sucking chip. There’s also the possibility that there are additional flash storage chips on the back-side of the mainboard that necessitated a thicker phone.
I for one (and I know I’m in the small minority here) wouldn’t mind a thicker, heavier iPhone.
Also, I’m inclined to think that 3rd party devices that plug into the docking port is a huge deal. Assuming it’s not locked to be GPS only. I was thinking that the GPS would come via a beefed up bluetooth stack but either way, I’m happy
I’m kinda with Scott here. But only kinda. If I may…
Of course it’ll be a 3G iPhone. The display will be a paper-thin color OLED, and the battery being double-size will only give a slight increase in thickness. The extra room will be taken up with the 3G and GPS chips.
Joe it’s possible that Michael Jackson is my long lost son; It’s possible that George Bush’s daughter is secretly in love with me. But it’s a fact that the iPhone is thicker because of the 3G chip set. I’ll eagerly await your mea culpa when that fact is public.
Non related to this article but what have happened to the site?
I Visited the ApplePhoneShow for the first time in a couple of weeks and at first I thought I was on the wrong site. What has happened with the site? It’s so, poor, now. I’m kinda shocked. First the podcast changed format from the good format we all know and love and now the site goes ugly?
Woah Scott, sorry I seems to have failed at articulating my point. I’ll offer a mea culpa right now of need be.
Firstly, I’ll take your sources over my rumor sites any day of the week and twice on sunday.
Second I know absoloutly NOTHING about 3G chipset formfactor, size or power consumption. I was strictly speculating. I’m just tossing ideas into the room while we wait in anticipation.
If anyone can cram amazing amounts of technology in such small packages as Apple, it’d be the first I’ve heard of them. I was just speculating.
Karl I am not sure how “The site is ugly” is a helpful comment - so I am not sure I can come up with a helpful reply.
Your opinion is in the vast minority. Most people like the new look. If you don’t - all I can say is sorry.
i believe you scott on the prediction but it is somewhat disappointing about the GPS. i would liked to have had GPS only in the car where it would have a constant charge and use the cell tower/wi-fi trangularization for other circumstances.
i do hope they add a 5 MP camera to it with video recording for short you tube styled clips.
The prediction may indeed prove to be accurate, unfortunately, I was hoping for something a little more exciting. I hope there is some other surprise.
Like:

4) Not thicker
Would have loved: “one more thing”
1) OLED
