Apple has decided to release the iPhone using the EDGE over-the-air wireless standard. A faster option is available called 3G. But some experts think adding 3G to the iPhone could raise its price by $100. No doubt Apple realized the already pricey phone couldn’t take that hit, so they opted for a compromise. The iPhone ships with wi-fi capability. Depending on where you live, it’s possible that you’ll get better service with wi-fi than you would with either EDGE or 3G.
There’s one point here that I haven’t heard discussed very much. If you use wi-fi on the iPhone, will you be able to tap into VoIP (Voice Over IP) or Skype and get cheaper usage rates?
