According to Macworld UK, Apple UK is rounding up the media for some kind of announcement on 9/18.
The event is already drawing speculation. Although the cryptic “mum is no longer the word” message remains mysterious (Apple PR is simply commenting that: “mum’s the word until the 18th”) the general consensus is that it’s the UK launch of the iPhone. Macworld’s editor Mark Hattersley said: “it’s a UK-specific event and we know the iPhone is due to be launched in the UK, so that’s the most likely scenario.”
Now, I’m not one to buy into every rumor, but it would be interesting if it is, in fact, the announcement of the iPhone launch date in the UK. Why? Well, for me it’s going to be vindication. I’ve been told by hundreds of people that the iPhone would flop in Europe because Europeans are just too darned smart to buy an overpriced phone that doesn’t include 3G data.
I can’t wait to see the people who predicted it would fail in Europe fall flat on their face as the iPhone flies out of stores just like it did in the US. Mind you, I have no problems with Europeans, and the sooner they can have their iPhones, the better off they’ll be. I’m just saying that we’ll know for sure just how right all the “they won’t buy it” folks were.
Any speculation from the peanut gallery on this big event?

Recently, several readers sent me e-mails pointing to a story about a man who claimed to have had plastic surgery on his thumbs to make it easier to type on his iPhone.
I saw that linked over at the iPhone Jaiku channel. It also came up on my Google news alert, and landed in lots of other places.
While I love the Internet, I hate the Internet echo chamber. People don’t appear to THINK BEFORE THEY LINK.

Well they’re at it again…The folks at The Street seem to have it in for the iPhone. Back on July 3, Scott Moritz ran a hit piece saying that Apple missed their sales numbers. Later, we found out he was wrong.
Then Scott Moritz went with another Apple hit piece yesterday that - surprise - turned out to be bogus.
It makes me wonder - how many times does Mr. Moritz need to be proven wrong before people figure him out?
There are three things that are amazing about this to me.

We’ve heard hundreds of iPhone rumors. Most (like 99%) turn out to be proven false before the phone has shipped. The Apple Phone Show’s Andy Ihnatko recently left this comment on a thread full of people guessing what was going to come of the iPhone. It says it all.
“When an iPhone rumor turns out to be bull — and at this point I’ve lost count — the source is usually some dude in a mall store who was probably trying to put something into a female customer’s pants that wasn’t made by Apple.”

I’ve seen all sorts of rumor sites proclaiming that Apple will release the iPhone as soon as June 11. I don’t buy it. Here’s why.
1) WWDC is that week and I don’t think Steve Jobs wants to use that time to intro the phone because it would collide with the announcement of Leopard’s final build and new MacBookPros.
2) Late June isn’t June 11. At the earliest, June 16 (last half of the month) could be considered “late June.”
3) Apple spokespeople have consistently used “late June” as their only talking point regarding the phone’s ship date.
4) Confidentiality on FCC Documents (user manual, photos) expires June 30th.
I’d love to be wrong on this by the way.
