Andy Ihnatko (The universe’s most beloved mac journalist) checks in at the APS for some Apple TV talk:

Be friendly to the atmosphere! Weather alarm clocks in SF are just stickers on glass! Scott was one of few people to not like the Apple TV Take 1, but loves take 2, and thinks it changes the nature of a computing platform. The more devices we get with an apple logo, the more that apple becomes a lifestyle hub. Scott uses the iPhone for TV shows as well as a phone. This is apple moving one step off the stage but taking a moment in the back-room. It’s about helping people and letting them help you. One of the cool things about the Apple TV is the new ability to get access to all the free content on the web. (Irish accent begins!) The youtube access is now much better, it becomes a true conduit for content. It brings piecemeal content to the TV, and unlike sitting in front of an iMac, it actually works. Scott is the typical apple user, but Scott really likes how he can have a photo slideshow which can be on a big-screen on an Apple TV, on the road via the iPhone and of course, on a mac via iPhoto. It brings things to the next level in terms of content, it is no longer about link bait, it brings user content to the same level as the broadcasters. If the Apple TV gets people producing high quality, high def, and free content- this changes the content game. Scott thinks that the Apple TV could have a reverse halo effect leading to the iPhone, Andy disagrees. However, but by making an integrated apple universe, it reduces the effect of DRM on a consumer, plus, Andy believes that DRM is going to be left behind. One of the great things about the end of the WGA strike is that the questions have been settled, so networks have a fixed fee structure, and can now publish stuff online. There is not interest in making good content for the Apple Universe. However, Scott does have one case of the reverse, halo-effect actually working. Andy thinks that the Apple TV changes the way nature of access to content, because it fuels the impulse buy, and no longer needs a computer. However, Scott thinks that the iPhone should be able to be a remote for the Apple TV. It comes down to the SDK.

Chris Breen, the Mac bouffant of knowledge, is here for the iPhone News:

The missing iPhone saga continues. It seems there are a LOT of unaccounted for iPhones, it turns out that according to China-Mobile that at least 400,000 unlocked iPhones are on their network in China, so 1 in 10 iPhones are being made in China, Shipped to the USA/Europe, and then ship them back to China where they are sold for a premium. The BBC plans to bring their iPlayer service to UK iPhone and iPod Touch services- which means BBC programs in H.264, so UK people are lucky! AT&T has introduced a $100 unlimited voice call plan. iPhone users can upgrade to this package without extending their contract, but you will still need to pay the minimum Data fees. Google has released info that the iPhone hits their search engine twice as much as any other mobile device, Why? Could it be that Google is easy to use on the iPhone, and that Google is the default when you are using safari on the iPhone, or it could be that iPhone users are just more curious on the web. Skyhook navigation news: the iPhone will look for local wi-fi and cell towers to tri-angulate them, wifi is more accurate, but not all wi-fi hotspots are listed, but you can now add these hot-spots to your maps on your iPhone pretty easily, just go to Skyhooks website, enter the street location of the wi-fi hotspots, enter your email address and the MAC address of the hot-spot, and it will be added to the database.

The iPhone website of the week

We were compressing an iLifeZone screencast for upload to iTunes, and everything was peachy. I mean, it was peachy until we found out that the resolution I was using while recording the screencasts was not compatible for viewing on the iPhone. I didn’t catch it during my post process either, so when an iLifeZone subscriber would sync my screencast to his/her iPhone, no video would show or play.

So, I had to check myself and make sure that my process included me recording my screencasts at an aspect ratio that would size correctly for iTunes, iPhones, and video iPods. I had a brain fart and was recording my screencasts at 1024 x 640. I need to increase my brain food during my morning meals. I have no idea where I came up with that setting - way off. When I am eating optimally and my brain is functioning properly, my ideal setting is to screencast at a resolution of 1024 x 768. That value is complimentary to the 4:3 aspect ratio, or the 640 x 480 resolution, supported by the iPhone, video iPod, and by Apple TV. This size preserves the aspect ratio that fits within the 480 x 360 landscape orientation on the iPhone. From the Apple knowledge base, the iPhone and iPod can play the following video formats:

  • H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  • H.264 video, up to 768 kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  • MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

If you need a refresher, as I sure did, or, are new to video compression for your shiny new 16GB iPhone and are wondering about supported file formats and types, check out the Apple’s iPhone Technical Specs here.
