Apple has decided to release the iPhone using the EDGE over-the-air wireless standard. A faster option is available called 3G. But some experts think adding 3G to the iPhone could raise its price by $100. No doubt Apple realized the already pricey phone couldn’t take that hit, so they opted for a compromise. The iPhone ships with wi-fi capability. Depending on where you live, it’s possible that you’ll get better service with wi-fi than you would with either EDGE or 3G.

There’s one point here that I haven’t heard discussed very much. If you use wi-fi on the iPhone, will you be able to tap into VoIP (Voice Over IP) or Skype and get cheaper usage rates?

Over at the iLifeZone blog, I ran a poll asking whether or not people planned on buying an iPhone. Approximately 85% of the 250 respondents said they were either certain to buy one, or pretty sure they’d buy one.

It looks like Mr. Jobs accurately predicted the potential interest in this little phone.

Apple registered the domain iPhone.org in December of 1999. One can assume that the company was working on the concept before that date. It must have taken great patience to wait until now to announce the phone, given the amount of money that has changed hands in the last eight years surrounding the cell phone business.

Well, well, well. It looks like Cisco is having some trademark trouble of its own. Last month, Cisco sued Apple over the use of iPhone, claiming it owned the trademark and Apple had no license to use the mark. Now, the plot thickens. A Canadian telecom sent Cisco Systems a cease and decist letter. It turns out, Comwave, Canada’s second largest VOIP service, has been using iPhone since 2004. It has an application for the mark in Canada.

What does all of this mean? Well now you see why we decided to call our show, THE APPLE PHONE SHOW!

Welcome to the Apple Phone Show. The combination blog/podcast will offer wall-to-wall coverage of Apple’s new cell phone. Why the Apple Phone Show instead of the iPhone Show? There are several reasons, not the least of which is we’re guessing Apple will change the name, as they did with the AppleTV. We also don’t want people to confuse what we’re talking about with the Cisco product, and we want to keep Apple’s legal team happy.

So look here for frequent updates and starting in February, join me and iPod guru Chris Breen, author of The iPod & iTunes Pocket Guide, Second Edition, Secrets of the iPod and iTunes (6th Edition) and Senior Editor at Macworld Magazine and Playlist Magazine, as we delve into all the tips, tricks, hacks, news and rumors that will no doubt swirll around this groundbreaking product.

And feel free to join our conversation. Let us know what you think. Let us know if you hear any cool rumors or what you want us to cover.

Thanks for stopping by.
