Have you ever thought about braving a road trip without your laptop, because you have an iPhone and don’t need no stinkin’ laptop? Or, maybe you dropped your iPhone into the keg and had to buy a new one. Either way, it’s probably a good idea to know where your iPhone data is backed up.
Just take a copy of the backup folder iTunes creates when you sync your iPhone, and drop it on a USB drive or other external source and keep it handy. If you need to restore your iPhone while vacationing from your laptop, you can drop a copy of your Backup folder on to another computer to restore your data (contacts and calendar). Note: Be sure to create a new account on the computer you use to restore your backup. Otherwise, you will overwrite any existing iPhone data. Your friend may not like you very well if you wipe out her precious iPhone data. Continue Reading »

Learning to develop applications can be a harrowing task for the uninitiated. Coding is an art and a science that helps me satisfy both hemispheres of my brain on any given day. With Macworld behind me, I am so excited for Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. There is no better way to improve your skills in any arena than to immerse yourself among the best. In preparation for the release of the iPhone SDK, I am ramping up my time spent with the Apple Developer Connection (ADC) Coding Headstarts.
If you’re a developer interested in learning more about application development using the Apple platform, this is absolutely the place to begin. You do have to be an ADC member to access some of the content. Apple does offer a free ADC online membership if you want to get your feet wet and see what it is all about.
I want to develop an on-board Dine-O-Matic style application for my iPhone. Real deep, right? Hey. Sometimes I just can’t decide where I want to eat.
What applications do you hope to see in Mac OS X Leopard or on the iPhone?

Starting February 1, O2, Apple’s exclusive partner for the iPhone in the UK, will allow significantly more voice calls and text messaging for its existing iPhone customers. With these increases O2 is reacting to low sales numbers in the UK for the iPhone and ongoing criticism regarding its tariff structure for the iPhone and other multimedia cell phones. The improvements are indeed significant: for example users of the entry level package of 35 GBP per month get increases from 200 minutes to 600 minutes voice calls and from 200 to 500 SMS messages.
Sales of the iPhone in the UK so far have been reported as around 190.000 units, slightly below the bottom of the expectations of 200.000 sold units for the first two months.
Germany’s T-Mobile reported sales of around 70.000 iPhones in the first two months since the launch there. Orange in France was more successful with around 70.000 sold units in the first month alone, maybe due to the fact that in France the iPhone is sold as a unlocked device.

Here are some photos I made in Vermont. Yes I know it’s too late for fall colors but save them for October if you want to be seasonal.
I hope you like them. These are two free wallpaper pics you can use on your iPhone.

While not an iPhone story, this may be of interest to some APS readers/listeners. I was on a panel with a bunch of other Mac podcasters during Macworld Expo. There was a lively, frank and in my opinion, entertaining discussion called the Mac Podcaster Meetup. Several prominent Mac podcasters were invited to take the stage and discuss a number of subjects of interest to new media folk.
The show was recorded in front of several hundred people at Jillians across from Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco. It’s broken down into two parts:
Part One here
Part Two here
Thanks to Adam from MacCast for hosting.

The iPhone SDK is generating quite a bit of buzz. Even Forbes Magazine has written about the excitement in the development community over next month’s planned SDK release.
